social media & Sustainability?

What is the connection between social media and sustainability? For five years I taught social media marketing in my Media English course at Kanada University of International Studies, where students learn about the power, influence and strategies of social media marketing and then, instead of a regular advertising project, create a campaign specifically around a social cause they are interested in.

The ultimate goal is to apply the power of social media for good.

I would always conclude the unit by encouraging my students to take their new social media skill further and use it to their advantage in their careers and advocacy. Without a doubt, every business, organization, even individual can benefit hugely from properly leveraging social media in their branding and communication, without burning out, if they know how to.

That’s why I was very happy to have connected with Beatrice Paesano, social media manager and virtual assistant at VirtualRise Solutions. She booked my career assessment call to learn more about working in the sustainability field with her skills and interests. After a wonderful call, I asked her to share her story because I truly believe that Beatrice is an excellent example for young professionals nowadays to DO WHAT YOU LOVE and MAKE THE WORLD BETTER at the same time.

Enjoy the interview!

The Interview

Charlotte: Hey Beatrice! First up, who are you and who do you serve? What's your story with sustainability?

Beatrice: Hi! I’m Beatrice, the owner of VirtualRise Solutions. I’ve been a Social Media Manager since late 2018, but only in 2020, I decided to start my journey as a freelance Social Media Manager and VA. After a few months, I understood that I wanted to dedicate my time and my services to businesses in the sustainability industry.

My mission is to help sustainable product-based businesses in setting up and implementing their social media presence and sales. I’m driven by the will of wanting those businesses to do well and attract more clients so that eco products will be more and more popular and accessible.

I first approached sustainability while living in San Francisco, CA, after watching a documentary called “What the health”. I started reading and researching about ways to live a more sustainable life and made my first eco swaps, focusing on personal care and beauty.

Charlotte: Fantastic! What prompted you to get on a call with me?

I only recently decided to live by myself and this gave me the chance to learn more about having a sustainable house. The amount of eco/natural options I have found is incredible and I love them all, but unfortunately, it is hard for me to have access to most of them right now because we are going in and out of lockdowns [in Italy] due to Covid-19. The lack of accessible products made me question my role in this lifestyle and how I could have a bigger impact.

For this reason, I decided I wanted to use my skills to help sustainable businesses. I thought to use my Social Media Management skills to help product-based sustainable businesses grow and sell more. In the process of doing research to build my business, I came across you and your business. You were super nice and hearing about what you do was very inspiring. In the long conversation we had, my favourite part was you sharing your knowledge and suggesting ideas on how to make my work with sustainability even more impactful.

Charlotte: What was the biggest "aha moment" you had from our chat? How has it impacted your work?

One of the thoughts that stuck with me the most was about sustainability and its connection to emotions. We know that fear tactics do not work when it comes to helping people shift their mindset about a topic. Therefore, we need to work on making sustainable living appealing by showing people that it is possible to live a sustainable life. Knowing this helped me a lot in defining how I wanted to build my business and what image of it I wanted to portray.

charlotte: please share with us a win you’ve had since our chat! I want to celebrate with you!

Since then I have been able to craft offers for sustainable businesses that not only will help them grow and sell more, but also help them in making an even bigger impact on the planet. I am very grateful for the conversation I had with you and I am looking forward to more opportunities to collaborate with you in the future.

charlotte: Is there anything else that you’d like to share about you or your business?

It feels amazing knowing that I will have the chance to work with a lot of sustainable businesses and that together we will have an even greater impact on our world’s future.
